"Keegan Pretty Much Owns the Franchise on 'A Streetcar Named Desire.' See This!"
Locally -- and in Ireland where they also perform -- the Keegan Theatre, in my opinion, pretty much owns the franchise on A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams. This is the seventh year that Keegan has staged an American classic in Ireland, and many times in the D.C. area.  They’ve got it down.  The story is familiar: the emotionally strained, broke and fragile Blanche DuBois comes to visit her sister Stella, who is married to that brute, Stanley Kowalski.  They live in the poorer section of hot and steamy New Orleans, just after World War II.  Generally, the Keegan actors have worked together through many different plays, but this year, Blanche, portrayed by experience, but Keegan newcomer, Kerry Waters, was made for the role.  Artistic director Mark Rhea is tremendous and foreboding as Stanley – and there’s an extra dimension of believability when the kind Stella is played by his real-life wife, Susan Marie Rhea.  Actor and artistic associate Eric Lucas plays Mitch, the nice guy in Stanley’s group of card playing pals, who initially is fond of Blanche.  The audience can feel the meltdown of Blanche as the Keegan players move about the realistic set by George Lucas, depicting the near squalor conditions.  Keegan productions have depth and texture because of the both the principal actors and its fine production team.  See this!-Rich Massabny
