THE KEEGAN THEATRE PRESENTS
Synge With Yeats: The Living and the Dead

ARLINGTON, VA. - The Keegan Theatre begins its 2000-2001 season with an evening of Irish plays including, Riders to the Sea, In the Shadow of the Glen, Cathleen Ni Hoolihan and Purgatory, written by J. M. Synge and W.B. Yeats, and directed by Keegan's Artistic Director Mark A. Rhea. This unique evening of theatre will be performed in the intimate atmosphere of the theatre's home base black box theatre at 1500 North Glebe Road in Arlington, Virginia.

Seven actors share a total of 16 roles in these four productions. "It is a challenge for the actors to establish character development for their various roles and to make each one unique," said Rhea. "My challenge is to keep each story specific while weaving together a consistent theme for all four," he added.

Don't miss this evening of classic literature in the traditional Keegan Irish tradition!

Riders to the Sea by J.M. Synge: In a cottage kitchen on the Aran Islands a woman awaits the news of her son's fate to the sea. Breathlessly poetic, devastatingly lyrical, J.M. Synge's masterpiece became the first to explore the elegant prose of these struggling people. Now considered to be the quintessential model of the one act play, it still haunts us today with the power that the dead hold over the living.

In the Shadow of the Glen by J.M. Synge: Synge wrote, 'There are three shadowy countries that are never forgotten in Wicklow-America, the Union and the Madhouse'. Set in the hills south of Dublin, this play alludes to them all, as an old man feigns dead to catch his wife in an affair.

Cathleen Ni Hoolihan by W.B. Yeats: On the eve of his wedding day, young Michael must decide the future that lay before him, and which path to it he will take. Written in 1902, Yeats' play answered the questions of the day, of Irish Independence, and in the end, at what cost might it be found.

Purgatory by W.B. Yeats: Yeats' play is a storm cloud of words, raining poetry down. Finding the meaning in loss, and the memory in darkness. It is a precursor to the raw word play of Dylan Thomas.
